• Chief - Division of Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery

    University of VirginiaCharlottesville, VA 22905

    Job #2617498300

  • Background: The Division Chief of Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery within the Department of Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial and Oral Health is a new position. The department is growing and evolving into a dynamic and comprehensive unit. This current position seeks to solidify Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery as a division within the department. This is a strategic hire aligned with the health system and designed to expand care for children across the Commonwealth of Virginia and within the region. Our first department chair, Dr. Milton Edgerton, was a world-renowned Pediatric and Craniofacial surgeon. Patients would travel from afar for his expert care and UVA was established as a destination center of excellence. An ambitious and energetic individual is being sought to continue that legacy of excellence. There are opportunities to be perform care for patients with cleft lip and palate, craniosynsotosis (head shape), benign malformations of the head, neck and body as well as other congenital deformities. In addition to the pediatric care, craniofacial care in adult reconstruction and aesthetic surgery would be encouraged and supported. Applicants at various stages within their career are encouraged to apply if developing in this way is a career goal.

Clinical Care: The new hire will be asked to further build the Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial surgical services. This will require extensive efforts in outreach and socialization. Partnering with UVAHealth and the strategic initiatives around pediatric care will be essential. In addition to expanding the pediatric service line, care for adult patients with trauma and cancer related disfigurements will be needed. Participation in the multi-disciplinary services related to cleft care and head shape deformities and other services will be needed and an emphasis on growth will be encouraged. Demonstrated success in building programs will be important.

The new Division of Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery will benefit from numerous complimentary services already in place. The Department has a robust microsurgical reconstruction program that can support the complex reconstruction needs of the CMF service. The division of Dentistry has a dedicated Pediatric Dentist that can support cleft and congenital dental care. Oral and maxillofacial services are also embedded within the department. The Department of Pediatrics at UVA is very strong and fully supportive of pediatric plastic surgery. Pediatric neurosurgery is in place and has an established collaborative relationship with the department.

Administrative: The current service line at UVA consists of two surgeons that perform Pediatric and Craniofacial surgery. Both of these surgeons are well regarded for their technical skills and have been in practice at UVA for many years. However, they are occupied with many clinical and administrative duties including Global Health leadership, Aesthetic Service Leadership and Program Director obligations. There will be natural opportunities for evaluating and further organizing Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery care pathways. A surgeon leader tasked to focus on these efforts is essential to growth of the program. Organization of on-call schedules, clinic dynamics, credentialing and collaboration will fall under this leaders duties. Developing and maintaining a comprehensive partnership with supporting programs will be essential. Additionally, developing metric based programs that define UVA Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial surgery as a center of excellence is needed. The Division Chief will report to the Department Chair in regards to clinical operations, financial performance and patient centered outcome metrics.

Research / Education / Innovation: As a leader within an academic medical center, it is expected that the Division Chief will have a high level of national visibility. This will include high level involvement in specialty specific societies, panel presentations and manuscripts related to the topic of Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery. The division leader should be capable of articulating innovative programs and initiatives designed to bring UVA Plastic Surgery to the top tier. Residents that are training at UVA should have opportunities to get advanced education in this area and pursue advanced fellowship at the most well respected programs. Health services research in this area would be valued. As an ambassador for the program, the ability of the Division Chief to network and foster relationships will be valued as will the ability to lead members of a team in a common goal.

    Education: Ph.D. or terminal degree.

    Experience: Three years
