  • UVA is seeking an Assistant or Associate Professor for a Structural Biologist position aas the Director of the Molecular Electron Microcopy Core (MEMC). The core Director will be expected to work closely with the Associate Dean for Research Infrastructure and the Office of Research Core Administration to ensure integration of the MEMC with other institutional research resources as well as the effective and efficient management of the core. Director will be responsible for supporting researchers in project design and data collection.

    Primary job duties include :

    • Providing leadership and day-to-day operation of the core's service laboratory.

    • Operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, including electron microscopes and support equipment.

    • Managing business aspects of the core (budget, billing, and reconciliations)

    • Drafting grant applications for the acquisition of instrumentation

    • Consulting with investigators in research design and drafting text for publications and grant applications

    Experienced in electron microscopy of biological samples, and preferably in cryoEM. Familiar with image analysis workflows for SPA and tomography. Flexible and creative in addressing a wide range of project goals.

    Requirements: .

    • Doctoral degree, preferably in physical or biological sciences

    Skills and Abilities Required:

    • Strong background in electron microscopy and image processing

    • Must be organized and meticulous in record keeping

    • Strong English verbal and written communication skills

    • Ability and willingness to collaborate with a variety of highly motivated researchers from various disciplines.

    • Excellent interpersonal skills are required

    • Motivated to learn new skills in a research

    • General computer skills

    Skills and Abilities Strongly Preferred :

    • Three to five years' experience beyond graduate training.

    • Computer skills in data management and scripting

    • Preference will be given to the applicant that has a strong working knowledge and experience with cryoEM in a shared resource.
