  • Description Our client, a nonprofit organization based in the East Bay, is looking for a Legal Secretary to join the team. This candidate should have at least three years of litigation experience to join our team. The legal secretary will work with attorneys supporting our work defending and promoting disability civil and human rights. This organization is a leading national civil rights law and policy center directed by disabled people and parents who have children with disabilities. Our mission is to advance the civil and human rights of people with disabilities through legal advocacy, training, education, and public policy and legislative development.

    Position Overview Under general direction, performs a variety of secretarial and litigation support work. This position requires knowledge of the preparation and processing of legal documents, legal terminology, civil procedures and discovery, and federal and state court rules. Responsibilities Prepares legal documents such as pleadings, briefs, proposed orders, complaints, and discovery Files documents in state and federal courts at both the trial and the appellate level Maintains litigation calendar and keeps check on cases to ensure timely filing of pleadings, and to inform attorneys of court imposed deadlines. Schedules and arranges meetings Creates and maintains physical and digital case files, including up-to-date indexes, memos, correspondence, and legal documents Assists with timekeeping and the preparation of billing reports Performs related work as assigned Requirements Qualifications We want to find the best candidate for the job and want to hear from candidates with diverse lived experiences. Minimum of three years of experience as a litigation legal secretary Command of federal and state court rules and procedures Highly proficient with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Google Workspace Knowledge of office practices, procedures, machines, and equipment Great proofreading skills including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and familiarity with legal terminology Finds pleasure in detail Ability to work under deadlines and complete job assignments on time Ability to determine work priorities
