10 tips to land your dream job

You spend a lot of time and energy on your job search and you know just what you want. It is impossible to think of everything when you are working on getting your next job. Here are ten tips that you may not have thought of that can give you a head start on getting that perfect job.

1. Create a website

A website is a great way to package elements of your resume and an interview all in one place. Templates to create simple web sites are often available from your internet provider, or you can search for other companies online that can give you web space and a template for a reasonable cost. On your site, include details about accomplishments, recommendations from co-workers, bosses or clients and demonstrate your expertise if appropriate. Creating a website demonstrates your willingness to go above and beyond as well as your technical savvy.

2. Keep important items accessible and updated at all times

This includes your resume, generic cover letter, a project list or portfolio, five references you can choose from and a generic follow up letter.

3. Be easily accessible

Make sure the potential employer has your home phone and/or cell phone and that the number you provide has reliable voicemail or an answering service. Provide your current email address. Check messages in all places several times a day.

4. Respond quickly

Unless there is a good reason not to, you should respond immediately to phone messages, email messages, advertisements and leads. If you keep all your documents handy and updated, responding quickly is simple to do.

5. Dedicate space to your job search

To help you stay organized and focused, dedicate desk space or other workspace to your job search. You can keep all your communication pieces, such as resume and portfolio, handy in case that important phone call comes in. Also keep copies of all the ads or leads you have applied to and what you send them so you are prepared for any follow up calls or emails.

6. Dedicate time to your job search

Especially if you are looking full-time, set a working schedule and treat it like you would a job schedule. Take your search seriously and invest the time it deserves.

7. Smile before you answer the phone

Smiling gives your voice a warm, confident and energetic tone. If a potential employer is calling, you want to make a good impression immediately.

8. Contract with the company

If you possible, contract or work temporarily for the company you are interested in to get a foot in the door and learn as much about the organization as you can. This will also help you to discover if you really want to work there.

9. Be willing to relocate

If you really want the job and you are asked about relocation, what is your answer? Are you willing to move? Know that answer solidly before you walk into an interview, even if you don’t think the job will require it. You never know what may be offered to you.

10. Practice your posture and handshake

Get feedback from friends on your handshake and your posture. Practice interview with them to get a sense of any changes you need to make, like a firmer handshake or sitting up straight.
