It can be a wonderful opportunity to develop your professional life skills when you find yourself between careers in the construction industry. With the right attitude, you can take the down time between positions, and turn it into prime learning time. Here are three ways to turn your loss into a win.

First, many people who looking for a new job can take advantage of learning opportunities that abound at community colleges and different government affiliates that make available education and training.

Be on the lookout for opportunities to learn for free or for a modest investment. The Squidoo website states, “The best place to start out on the internet to look for job assistance is the Employment and Training Administration website. The purpose of the website is to give information about job training, worker dislocation programs and information about grants given to state employment agencies.”

It goes on to add, “Your first stop should be at the Find job and career information. On this page you have options to do such things as assess yourself, which offers free online assessment resources. This is a great place to give you a general idea about your interests and to assess your skills.”

And finally it adds, “There are also other resources on this page that will provide you with a wealth of information about industries and if those industries are high growth and high paying.” For more information go to the ETA website

The career one-stop program has its’ own website that lists where the one-stop career locations are in your area. The website also has job search information and it provides tips on making resumes and on how to handle job interviews.

Next, seek out professional career transition coaches who can advise you on what strategies to develop and which skills to learn. When you can take the initiative to seek out professionals in the career transition industry, you are one step ahead of most other people who are just waiting for the “good fairy” to come to their aid. The good career transition coaches are well worth the investment and may be covered by your former employer.

Finally, develop your own self development program. The library is a terrific place to go and research the knowledge that is available, and can help you make your career transition more quickly and smoothly. Librarians love to help those who want to help themselves. They can direct you to the books, materials and the websites that can give you a plethora of information and practical guidelines that can start you on the road to your next job. The train to your next career is pulling out of the station. Are you ready to get on?
