If you are looking for accounting jobs, the location where you conduct your search can make a big difference to your chance of success. The financial staffing company Accounting Principals has compiled a list of the top 10 U.S. cities for accounting and finance professionals.

The up-and-coming city of Houston features on the list, thanks to the explosion in accounting jobs that has recently taken place in the city. The energy sector in Houston has been expanding rapidly in recent years, with companies moving into the area to exploit natural oil and gas reserves in Texas. This boom has given rise to a number of other industries, such as energy trading, that offer jobs to finance professionals. The general rise in economic activity in Houston has created a huge increase in demand for qualified and experienced accountants. In addition to plenty of accounting jobs with decent salaries, Houston also boosts a relatively low cost of living compared to many of the other cities on the list.

California features heavily on the list of the top 10 U.S. cities for accountants, with four out of the top 10 places going to Californian cities. The two cities that you might expect to see on this list are Los Angeles and San Francisco, both economic hot-spots offering accounting jobs along with a high quality of living. In addition, you could consider looking for accounting jobs in Newport Beach, Orange County, which offers a pleasant and safe environment for raising a family, as well as an unemployment rate of less than 3 percent for accounting professionals. The final Californian city to make the list is San Mateo, where there are plenty of small and medium-sized businesses looking for accountants to balance their books.

If you'd rather stay closer to the East Coast than the West, then Paramus, N.J. is a good place to look for accounting jobs. This hot-spot for the manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries currently has a high demand for qualified accountants. As a bonus, it's close to New York City, which offers plenty of opportunities for both work and play.

Other cities on the list include Richmond, Va., which is a stable base for many different types of industries, including finance, insurance, retail and manufacturing. Accountants with experience in tax and audits are especially in demand in Richmond. This city also featured on the top 10 list in 2013. As you might expect, Chicago also appears on the 2014 list, as do Portland and Raleigh.

Finance and accounting professionals are in demand in many different parts of the United States. Consider searching for accounting jobs in the cities listed by Accounting Principals to increase your chance of success on this career path.
