Interesting topics in retail

This will be a monthly series discussing news and updates in the retail industry that I find interesting. There's always something new happening. Trends are always changing. Anyone interested in a career in the retail industry should be aware of such news.


So here's the first two newsbytes for October.



1) Walmart and Facebook have partnered up to help the supermarket chain target customers. The page called "My Walmart" lets followers know what's going on at the chain in their neighborhood. Roughly 3,500 chains are included in the new campaign that informs customers of deals, discounts and new products.

I've talked about retail and social media more than once and it's interesting to read about the new ways companies are "jumping on the bandwagon." Will it get more customers in the stores? That remains to be seen.

2) Target claims that by 2015 it will only sell sustainable seafood (fresh and frozen) in its stores. "Sustainable" means that no species will be over fished. In addition, those that are fished will be fished in a safe and non-destructive manner.

It's great when retailers take environmental issues to heart. This is an issue that real people are concerned about and I believe it helps the retailers' image when they act on these sentiments. I know I'll feel better if I ever buy fish from Target.
