Using Glassdoor to Find A Job

Posted by

For some time now, I've talked about how important networking is to your job search. When you're out there looking for a job, doing research on companies and targeting specific companies you'd like to work for is an important part of your strategic job search strategy. Once you have an idea of where you want to go next in your career, knowing the right people to help you along the way is crucial.

Your social network, both online and off is a key resource for finding out about job leads and getting valuable job advice. As the old saying goes, it's more about who you know rather than what you know. Now, Glassdoor is trying to help you get all the information you need. If you're not familiar with them, Glassdoor is a website that allows you to really research a company and find out about typical salaries, positions and even can give you some of their sample interview questions.

The company has developed a new way to get a leg up on your job search by using your Facebook friends. By connecting your Facebook account with Glassdoor, you can see not only the job listings, reviews, salaries and so on, but you'll also find out which of your Facebook friends or friends of friends work for the company. This makes it easier to find out which of your friends can help you get your foot in the door.

Using social networking sites to further your job search isn't anything new. Sites like Linkedin are designed for just that purpose. Although most job seekers keep their job searches confined to Linkedin and Twitter, there's no reason not to tap your Facebook contacts as well. Not everyone is on Linkedin and you wouldn't want to miss out on discovering that your best friend's mom works at the company you have been trying to get in with.

When you're developing your strategic job search plan, don't overlook any of your social networks - all you need is one good shot.
