A Look at How Job Seekers Use Social Media

Posted by

Networking is one of the foundations of finding the job that you really want. I know, I say that all of the time here, but it never hurts to repeat it. For new grads, looking for a break into their industry or those who are out of work and looking for their next job, networking using social media is the best starting point.

When used in combination with a good job board, like the ones at Nexxt, social media can be an extremely effective job-search tool. Why? Mainly because it can allow you to reach out to people across the world, and many who you wouldn't have had access to otherwise. When you think about it, the internet has made our world a whole lot smaller and a social media site is like being friends with a guy who knows everybody. He can give you an introduction, but the rest is up to you.

So many job seekers and other professionals use social media. In fact, LinkedIn, a professional networking site, had over 150 million users last year. And it's not just LinkedIn. Social sites like Facebook and Twitter are also being used for job searches in greater numbers.

Jobvite recently did an in-depth study on the use of social media by job seekers, and their findings are surprising. Here's a look at their infographic:

As you can see, Facebook is the leader in the social networking game and as a result, it receives the majority of job search activity. 44 percent of job seekers use it, followed by LinkedIn at 26 percent and Twitter at 23 percent.

Four out of every ten people looking for work have over 150 contacts on their social networking sites.

One in six people found their last job through social media.
