How To Survive in a Mind-Numbing Job

Are you stuck in a job you hate? Some tips to help you change your soul-crushing job into one that may actually be fun.

These days, good jobs are hard to come by. If you are lucky enough to have secure, full-time employment that generates a salary that is adequate to pay your bills, then you know how good you have it. But, as a result of the tough economy and the tougher job market, many employers have added more and more responsibilities and stresses on to their employees. The result is that many people feel stuck in their job and are growing more and more unhappy each day.

Your job is the place where you spend the largest portion of your day. If you dread going and spend your time hating what you do, it can have a huge impact on your overall happiness, the quality of your home life and even your health.

If you are stuck in a mind-numbing, soul-crushing job, there are some things you can do to make it fun again. Here are some things you could try:

  • Think about what has changed about your job – If you were once happy at your job, think about what recent changes have happened that are causing you stress. Is it that you have to work longer hours, did you have to take a pay cut? Maybe you are feeling unappreciated or just feeling trapped? Once you find out what the root cause of your unhappiness is, you can try to make adjustments to correct it.

  • Change the way you interact with others – Most of the time, job unhappiness has a lot to do with tension between co-workers and even supervisors. If that is the case for you, try bringing a different energy into work each day. Change the way you interact with your co-workers and see if it makes a difference. Sometimes making a small change, like asking a co-worker you have tension with out to lunch, can change the entire energy of your interaction.

  • Try to recapture gratitude – Gratitude is a wonderful thing. It can make things that seem like they are so important fade to the background. If you are plagued with negativity, start looking for things to be grateful for. It might be as easy as listing the reasons why you are lucky to have a job.

  • Help others – The biggest reasons that people are unhappy is that they feel anonymous, they think their work is unimportant and they don't know how to measure their success. If you are feeling this way, odds are good that others in your office feel this way too. So, make a goal to help one co-worker each week to feel better about what they do. When you help others find happiness, it makes you happy to.
