Lessons You Can Learn From The Princess Bride

Posted by

With this crazy weather we have been having lately, I found myself laying on the couch snuggling up to a trusty box of tissues (you know, the kind with lotion) and trying to get over this horrid cold. One of my favorite movies to watch when I am feeling sick is The Princess Bride. While I was watching it, I realized that there are many things we can learn from this movie and apply to our lives and our job search.

You might think it is silly, but inspiration can come from many different places. So, here is some advice and wisdom you can learn from The Princess Bride and other movies:

Be Patient
You rush a miracle man, you get rotten miracles

Be sure to get a detailed job description
You never said anything about killing anyone.

Sometimes, you have to delegate in order to get everything done
You know how much I love watching you work, but I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder and Guilder to frame for it. I'm swamped!

Take time to take care of yourself
Get some rest. If you haven't got your healthy, then you haven't got anything.

Make sure you proofread your resume and cover letter
You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

There are times when you have to work with a competitor in order to achieve a goal
Man in Black- If you are in such a hurry, you could lower a rope or a tree branch or find something useful to do.
Inigo – I could do that. I have some rope up here, but I do not think you would accept my help, since I am only waiting around to kill you.
Man in Black – That does put a damper on our relationship.

Be specific about what you are looking for and tell everyone you know-
I do not mean to pry, but you don't by any chance happen to have six fingers on your right hand?

Don't trust people in masks
You be careful. People in masks can't be trusted.

No matter how down you are, you can still make a comeback
Westley – Why won't my arms move?
Fezzik – You've been mostly-dead all day.

And my personal favorite:

Make a clear and concise 30 second elevator pitch, stating who you are and what's your purpose
Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
