When you're on the hunt for a new job, it's important to think about your own well-being and what you want from a new employer. When you go to your next interview, be ready to ask questions as well as answer them. What's the best way to do this? Brainstorm a list of as many employment issues as possible, including the essentials such as salary, benefits and holiday leave.

In addition to the basic questions, think about other details concerning these topics:

  • How many hours are you expected to work every week?
  • What type of health insurance will you be offered?
  • Is there an unpaid leave policy?
  • What is the maternity leave policy?
  • How does the employer cover malpractice issues?

Also think about the other factors that will affect your on-the-job performance. They may not be the first things that come to mind in the interview seat, but they can play a big part in your career choices. So do some more thinking about the endless other concerns that might play a part in your professional happiness. To get you started, begin with these questions:

  • Will the employer cover any further education?
  • Is there a profit-sharing plan for employees?
  • How do they handle family leave?
  • Could you have the chance to do volunteer work through the organization?
  • What time will weekends begin and end?
  • Will they pay for association membership?

It will pay off in the long run to spend time thinking about these issues now. Create a list of questions to take with you to your interview so you can be sure to get the answers you are looking for. You deserve the best in your career, and it's up to you to go out and ask for it!
