One Way to Find out Which Career is Best for You

Zig Ziglar said it best when he used these words, “There is plenty of room at the top if you are willing to take the stairs.” Many times today, people are looking for the easy way to find the job of their dreams. They look for a construction job or career that pays the most money, but it is not necessarily something they would be good at, nor do they really want to do it. They don’t bother to get any experience in the field they would like to enter. So, many times they apply for a job that is only representing to them a paycheck. That is a sure fire method for ending up in a career that is not a good fit for them.

One of the best ways to find the career that is right for you is to first, do some solid research that involves communicating with others. Ask around and find out who is already in a career that interests you. Call them on the telephone and set up a time to do an informational interview with them. Prepare some good questions for them, that when answered, will help you learn a great deal more about that particular career.

Many times people hesitate in asking others, because they are afraid of rejection. Hey, all they can say is no, or better yet, yes. Consider the fact that you are worth the investment of time and energy to research the career for which you have an interest. Your respect for yourself will be communicated to others when you ask for twenty to thirty minutes of their time. You can meet with them face to face or talk on the phone with them about the career they have chosen. Remember, people love to talk about themselves. Most times they will be honored and pleased that you asked them for their advice.

Another way to research the career that is right for you is to go online to Linkedin, and join a professional group in your field of interest. You can ask who might be interested in spending some time with you on Skype, to help you gather information about the career you are investigating. By using Linkedin, you open up your options many times over, because of the vast number of people who are accessible and are part of this network. Using Linkedin is very similar to going to an actual physical place where you can meet and become familiar with the people who are in the room. It is just a virtual way of doing it.

Whichever way you choose to gather information from others, you will be learning knowledge and insights you would never have been able to glean from just reading an article.
