The Interview Question of the Week - Why Should I Hire You?

Posted by

Once again, it's time for the Interview Question of the Week!

For most job seekers, being invited to interview for a job is exciting. The interview is their chance to wow the hiring manager and is door to the opportunity they have been looking for. This is the chance to shine, and the best way to stand out from the crowd is to be prepared for anything the interviewer might throw out.

In order to help you get prepared, each week we take a new interview question and break it down to come up with the best possible answer. When you think about your answers to these questions ahead of time, you will already have an idea of how you want to answer it, and you won't have to worry about suddenly drawing a blank or stammering through it.

So, here is the Interview Question of the Week:

Question:
Why should I hire you?

Why its a trap:
The tricky thing about this question is that it seems so easy on the surface. It really is one of those questions that interviewers ask in order to see if you came prepared. If you haven't given this one a great deal of thought, most likely your answer will involve a great deal of stammering or “uhms”.

The best answer:
Even if the interviewer doesn't ask you this question, you can be sure that they are thinking it. After all, it is what they are trying to determine during the interview process. Before you come up with your answer, its a good idea to read the job description over several times. Try to get a clear idea of what the company is looking for and what their needs are. Then, using this information, you can go through each of the job requirements and give an example of how you meet that requirement.

For example:

“Well, I see from the job description that you are looking for someone who can handle the responsibilities of running an office smoothly and I have 10 years experience doing just that. It also says that you need someone who can work with parents, teachers and students alike. As you can see from my resume, this is where I excel...” Do this for each of the job requirements.

This part shouldn't be difficult. When you are looking at a job posting and deciding if it is a job you want to apply for, you should be going down the list of requirements and thinking about how your skills and experience would relate. If you can't answer this question, then it may not be the right job for you.

What do you think about this question and answer? Are there other questions you would like to see answered here? Let me know in the comments.
