Uniting Utilities and Telecom Service Providers

Posted by

A new study released by the Utilities Telecom Council (UTC) together with Verizon, revealed a number of specific requirements that utilities and telecom service providers must adopt to help utilities build those much talked about smart energy grids.

The study took a closer look at the technical factors that utilities and telecom industry partners need to embrace in order to deliver high quality utility communication services. The issues of prime importance to utilities and the communications links used to support them were high reliability, higher bandwidth, very low latency, wide ranging coverage, ample security, and power supplies that remained uninterrupted.

While most utilities are aware that they need to update their existing communications infrastructure, they must depend on the cutting edge technology offered by today's communications service providers to ensure their success.

Since utilities' operations vary widely from state to state and municipality to municipality, the study simply lays out a template for how the utility and communications industries can work in tandem. The study also points out the importance of reliability and security as utilities move forward with the smart grid paradigm.

If you're considering a career in the utilities industry or seek to advance in the field, you might consider adding telecom and security to your repertoire of skills and knowledge.
