U.S. Postal Service: Never(more) on Saturdays

Posted by

“Neither snow, nor rain, nor gloom of night, stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” These words, ascribed to Herodotus in 530 B.C., are the official motto of the U.S. Postal Service. Herodotus could not have imagined that over 2500 years later, a failing economy, rising costs and digital communications like email and texting would finally stop postal workers in their tracks. At least on Saturdays.

Some may say it was inevitable. The U.S. Postal Service has long been used as a model for poor customer service—slow, inefficient and costly. Now that the service is being cut, one new study claims that it is the most efficient postal service in the world. Yes, the most efficient. A new study by economists tested the efficiency by mailing letters to 10 false addresses in 159 countries from a post office in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They then tracked them to see how many were returned and how long it took for them to return.  Not surprisingly, all 10 letters mailed to an address in the United States were returned the quickest. El Salvador was next in line with Luxembourg the slowest.

Of course, mail sent from the U.S. to a fake address in the U.S. would be returned the fastest! Still, the study was cited to show the U.S. postal service was the most efficient in the world at delivering mail.Studies and statistics can be used to make all kinds of claims. The article, “Is the U.S.Postal Service The World’s Most Efficient,” points out some weaknesses in the study.

The study was one-sided. All letters were mailed from the United States. The author asks if the results could have been different if the letters were mailed from, say, Mongolia. Before making the statement that the U.S. is the best, the study could have tested delivery from other countries as well. Often companies look at one aspect of a delivery system or process and declare it “the best” without examining it from all angles. Incomplete testing can give a false sense of customer service.

Foreign countries may not be as concerned about rerouting mail halfway across the world. Rerouting mail within the U.S. is relatively easier than returning a letter from New Zealand. How many customer service decisions are based on how easy it is for the company to respond instead of the inconvenience of the customer? A misdirected letter may have important information, documents or a check which is of major importance to the recipient. The customer is more important than the inconvenience of fixing an error or the effort to make things right.

Another possible reason for the delay from foreign countries is distance from the customer. Not many customers are going to make an International call to talk to a customer service rep. If the call is free, as it is within most countries, customers don’t think twice about calling customer service. How many digital phone services have the capability to make international calls? How do you make one from your Smartphone? The foreign countries in the study may not have hustled to get the letters returned because they didn’t fear calls from angry customers.

One positive review online doesn’t mean your service is four-star. In the same way, a few irate customers in one day don’t mean that a customer service rep is incompetent. Companies have to gather large amounts of data over a period of time to get a clear picture of customer satisfaction. They can’t manufacture studies or manipulate data to prove excellent customer service. Your service is only as good as your next happy customer. Consistency, efficiency and friendliness every day for each customer will keep the company open for business and employees on the job.

I definitely agree with the 'one sidedness' of the survey not being enough to get an accurate fix on the true model of customer service the post office is these days.Besides; mail delivery is not the U.S. Postal SERVICES' only service. They tell us where to place our mailbox; sometimes unable to make up their minds, they keep changing their minds. And God forbid one has more to do then to dig up & reset their mailbox every so often. Then you don't get any mail at all. Being keepers of our mail, on average how much do they loose? And my favorite; HOW MANY LETTERS, OFTENTIMES IMPORTANT LETTERS; are MISDELIVERED???? You know, like, My name is Mrs. Humphrey Bogart and 'I live at 123 Main St., Hesperia, CA 92345' & I get a "check" for John Doe at, '543 Gotcha Covered Rd., Hesperia, CA 92345'? These are just the mishaps I've encountered. Has anyone actually looked at the filed complaints with our U.S. Postal Service system? As for that matter, be an average Jane Doe and try to file a complaint with the U.S. Postal System. While we do not expect our U.S. Postal Service system to be perfect, the system should be accountable.

I think the us postal service does a pretty good job delivering mail.  Once in awhile a piece of mail may get lost or take a long time to get to its desination, but not very often. that's fine if they don't want to deliver mail on Saturdays. I hate it when the cost of stamps goes up every so often but prices on other products goes up also.Sincerely,Shirley g

The government needs to have a wake up call.  They keep cutting american jobs and benefits.  The deductibles on health insurance is so high there really isn't a need to have insurance.  I really do not see them cutting any as you say fat from the top.  They work part time with more than full time pay and beneifits.  Today is Saturday and what do you know a government vehicle was in the McDonalds drive thru with their childern in the car with them.  If you want to talk about cut backs stop letting these people use the cars including the gas, that the people pay for.  Maybe if they paid their fair share including using their own vehicles for their personal use we as a country might save a whole lot of money

I am glad the US Mail is closing one day. It will save us some money. The USA is bankrupt borrowing $50,000 every second. It cannot go on this way...The USPS is an example of Government that is not serving the people. I am enraged that Congress only works three days per week and has EVERY holiday off. Now, in times of NEED, they should be working EVERY day till the budget is balanced. The USPS is an example of government at its most in efficient. I used to mail a lot of items as I downsized and was selling off all my collectibles over the years. There are three PO.s where I live. I drive 5 miles to the farthest PO because the tellers there are reasonably efficient. The PO nearest my home has all women tellers who seem to be PMS'ing...constantly. Always in a bad MOOD UNLESS THEY ARE Friends with the customer...then they..STOP WORKING and chat. I sometimes go to this one.The last PO, near me is so bad.....I am fearful for my life. This is because the tellers are SO SLOW,....many people in line get angry and I am afraid they will resort to violence one day. I seldom go there any more. The PO, is an indication of our government....it has failed the people. No wonder the USA is no longer a world leader...and relegated to an AA- rating financially from an AAA rating just a while ago.To read about who are the biggest THIEVES in Washington, check out the book...."throw them all out"....a neat bit of investigative reporting....that you never hear referenced in the electronic media...

I DON'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THEM CUTTING OUT SATURDAY'S ON DELIVERING THE MAIL,THEY HAVE TO DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THE POSTAL SERVICE AND IF THAT MEANS NO MAIL ON SATURDAY THEN SO BE BUT LET THE PUBLIC KNOW IN ADVANCE ON WHEN THIS IS SUPPOSSE TO TAKE EFFECT.

As a retired postal worker who worked on both sides of postal crafts carrier 12 yrs and Window Clerk 12 alot of the time the customer create problems by not writing legible which includes apartment #'s north, south complete addresses that adds to  delays in delivery and processing and deliveries can't be made  where there is not a labeled mail receptacle.  Customers have to take responsibility for efficient service by doing their part.

I have known many, many postal employees over the years and been in hundreds of post offices and talked to plenty at length. Bottom line extermely poor management all the way up the line.Everyone saw the post office going down the tubes and management ignored it at all levels. Grossly overpaid, crazy benefit packages....the only reason they got away with it was because while they supposedly aren't part of the government, once again therein lied the other major problem....to much government involvement. I am sure alot of people are sorry to see the post office in the sate it is.....look in the mirror all you top noche management running it. Don't deal with it by cutting into the retirement package your stuck with. Start with your pays, make all supervisors accountable and pay far more attention to your operations...they continue to be excessively wasteful...

For any results of any (poll)study to be valid, the study must be double-blind. This one was just blind. A letter mailed  from Cambridge to Cambridge would certainly arrive sooner that one mailed from Juno, Alaska...same USPS.
